It is also known for being the model of the cedar door painting "Sakura" by Meiji Hashimoto in the Matsuno-ma main hall of the Imperial Palace and the mural "Shiki Jumoku-zu" by Hiroshi Senju on the wall of Akasaka Sacas Akasaka Biz Tower. During the blooming season, countless small pale pink flowers bloom from branches extending in all directions. Due to the Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear accident, it had long been a difficult-to-return area, but in January 2022, with partial easing of entry restrictions, it became possible to view cherry blossoms along the entire 2.2 km in spring of the same year. Source: https://sou-sou-fukushima.jp/spot/319 2025.6.17 【Natsui Thousand Cherry Trees】With the wish, 'To make our hometown a beautiful village of cherry blossoms, and under these cherry trees, to harmonize our community,' the residents of the Natsui and Nantarai districts planted 1,000 Somei Yoshino seedlings along both banks of the Natsui River over a stretch of 5 kilometers. This is what has become today's Natsui Thousand Cherry Trees. The planting of these cherry trees was driven by local volunteers who called on the community with messages such as 'Let's create a beautiful environment,' 'Seek greenery, cherish flowers, and cultivate a rich emotional character,' and 'Let's promote the development of our hometown.' As a result, donations were received from local residents, businesses, and people originally from the district, making this planting possible. The Natsui River is a Class 2 river, 67.1 kilometers long, originating in the central Abukuma Mountains in eastern Fukushima Prefecture. It flows westward, then turns southeast in the Natsui district of Ono Town, crosses the northern part of Iwaki City, and empties into the Pacific Ocean. The improvement of farmland along this river through land development projects led to the river's renovation in the district, which in turn prompted the residents to plant trees in April of Showa 50 (1975), continuing to the present day. Currently, in this district, the 'Natsui Thousand Cherry Trees Festival Executive Committee' is organized by two administrative districts, the local chamber of commerce, and a collective organization of shrines. They devote efforts to the maintenance and preservation of the thousand cherry trees. Local residents volunteer to care for the trees with the mindset of 'taking care of our district's cherry trees with our own hands,' protecting the thousand Somei Yoshino cherry trees, which are susceptible to disease.
