I've owned the Shimano SLX for almost two years and struggled to find anything wrong with it; here's why! It's very reasonably priced. Sitting around $100 to $150 depending on where you buy it is an excellent price point, considering the quality of this reel. Smooth Casting I can cast as far as I need and it's very smooth. Fewer backlashes I'm the king of backlashes, but thanks to the Shimano SLX's variable braking system, I experience fewer backlashes no matter what lure I'm using. This is a centrifugal braking system, which is just a fancy way of saying that more brake is applied as the spool spins faster, helping the spool gradually slow down, so you get fewer backlashes. Durable I've beat this reel up by having it bounce around in my rod box, on my kayak trailer, dropping it on the ground, and just general wear and tear. It looks a little worn but still functions flawlessly! Not just a specialty reel I use it with a number of lures as it's a medium-speed reel, which is perfect for a wide range of applications. Even though I struggled to find anything wrong with it, I did find something. Several people online complained that they couldn't get it back together after taking it apart for maintenance. I think it's an excellent idea to perform basic maintenance on your reels to ensure they last as long as possible. However, you must know how to get it back in working order once you've taken it apart! There are YouTube videos on how to do this, so it's not a major concern for me, but something you should be aware of.
