Letterlocking at home! Three simple models (no special equipment needed) (UH0246)
Model found in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries (MIT), Unlocking History Research Group archive, MC 0760. Hi everyone! A lot of people are spending more time at home at the moment, so we thought we'd make a little video about letterlocking to help you with something fun to do. Now is a great time to write letters to friends and family – and if you lock them too, that'll be extra special for the person receiving the letter. We want to show you three kinds of letterlocking you can do at home, using any old sheet of paper. You don't need any special tools, but if you have some glue, sticky tape, or some stickers, they will come in handy. Anyone can have a go at letterlocking, and everyone loves receiving locked letters. We hope this video might be especially helpful to teachers and parents looking for activities through summer 2021. The three models we make here each have their own video too: 1. Russian triangle: Letterlocking: Lucy May Schofield's "Pis'ma-treigol'niki = Letters of triangles," England (2013) Letterlocking: Russian WWII Soldier Triangle Letter, Russia (1944) 2. Tuck-and-seal Letterlocking: ‘Tuck-and-seal’, Italy (1580s) Letterlocking: John Donne's tuck-and-seal letter to Sir Henry Marten, England (1622) 3. Brienne diamond Letterlocking: Brienne Postal Archive: "I wish you 100,000 good nights,...", diamond letter Holland (1694) Letterlocking: Brienne Postal Archive: Hate Mail?: A Diamond-shaped letter in the Brienne Postal Archive, Europe (1690–1711) Produced by Jana Dambrogio and Daniel Starza Smith.
