A Walk on the Moon - The White Mountains of Crete | Season 2 - Episode 11

The White Mountains of Crete is a unique mountain range unlike any other in the world. At an altitude of 2000 meters they form an alpine desert, with an otherworldly scenery. The terrain is dark full of dips, potholes and craters, while the mountaintops are strikingly white, because of the limestone. This unique geological formations create a trully incredible lunar landscape, that enchants any who will hike there. The journey continues in Season 2, where we go to places overlooked or we go off trail to rediscover locations long forgotten. Emphasis is given at the historical and cultural importance of the routes and the life that once was in these mountains. In the span of 14 episodes we will trek in the alpine desert, reach the most extraordinary peaks, visit breathtaking gorges and go beyond the clouds. The most unique feature of the White Mountains of Crete is their bare alpine desert. It is characterized by the color contrast of the limestone mountains, with white peaks projecting above a black floor, full of potholes and chasms. When encountering this mesmerizing geology it is hard not to think that this is the surface of the Moon. So we made a demanding and challenging trek on this incredible lunar landscape. We started from Mavros Charakas l, or the dirtroad from Anopolis. Our first objective was to cross Pavlia Chalara , a strange , jagged are at the west of Pavlias Summit. After that we headed east to enter Mavri Lakkoi or the Black pits. We took the so called "Bridge and cross the Black Pits. Then we pass led by Vrisali, a small hole on the ground that concentrates rain water. And lastly we headed to Koutalas Cave, located at the northest feet of Kakovoli, where women and children of Askyfou found refuge multiple times at war time.
