Jaulian Buddhist Stupa & Monastery Taxila Haripur UNESCO World Heritage Site

Come with us to Taxila and travel back in time. We give you a wee glimpse of the ancient metropolis of Taxila. When it comes to ancient history, Pakistan contains its fair share of treasures, the ancient metropolis of Taxila being one. It is a city of the Gandharan civilisation, sometimes known as one of its capitals, whose history can be traced from early microlithic communities to almost 1000 CE. Taxila was a hub of Buddhism, a centre of learning, an urban metropolis and a meeting point of various cultures, namely the Achaemenids, Greeks, Mauryans, Scythians, Parthians, Kushans, Huns and eventually the Muslims. Although it was lost to time for nearly 1000 years following its decline, the metropolis and its multitude of treasures came to light in the late 1800s CE under Alexander Cunningham who was an antiquarian for the British Raj and more prominently under John Marshall, the first director of the Archaeological Survey of India in the early 1900s CE. Along with discovering the Indus Valley civilisation, Marshall also did major work in Taxila which bring to light this ancient and mysterious culture. We take you to Jaulian (Seat of Saints) a remnant of Gandhara heritage, a Buddhist monastery along the Silk Road dating from the 2nd century CE and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site too. 35 Km from Islamabad the monastery and university of Jaulian is situated on a mountain top. Jaulian was a significant seat of learning during the ancient Kingdom of Gandhara. History shows that this place attracted scholars from India, Afghanistan, China, Persia and Greece. You get to see some remarkable stupas here. They are intricately decorated with figures depicting the life and philosophy of Buddha. Another intersting feature is the meditation chambers. We thought the most interesting statue in Julian was that of the Healing Buddha. Legend goes that if you place your finger in the navel of the torso you will be healed of all illnesses.
