The day after winning the ITT at the Tour de Matra, I was set to return to road cycling after a ten-year hiatus to try to win a World Championship quota in Japan in a road race. Three laps, three climbs of 13-15 km, and a finish right at the highest point in Hungary. In theory, it suited me perfectly, and I was optimistic about this start.
