Big Country - Wake (Stuart and Bruce, 1981)

When Stuart Adamson first got together with Bruce Watson and started writing songs in May and June of 1981, a room in the Townhill Community Centre in Dunfermline was used as a makeshift studio. There as just a duo and armed with guitars, drum machine, keyboard and a Tascam 4 track portastudio, they wrote and recorded the first 9 songs that would set the foundation of the new collaboration that would come be known as Big Country. Harvest Home, Heart and Soul, Angle Park, Wake, Lost Patrol, We Could Laugh, Echoes, The Crossing and Inwards were those first 9 songs written and recorded. Officially, only Harvest Home, Angle Park and We Could Laugh have been released. (The Crossing 30th Anniversary Deluxe CD) although a full version of We Could Laugh is here:    • Big Country - We Could Laugh (Stuart and B...   and the other 1981 ones can be found on my channel, newly uploaded. Wake - the original 1981 recording by Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson. No prizes for guessing which Big Country song was inspired by the guitar riffs in this song, you'll pick it up straight away. Again, some real experimentation with sounds going on and a very Peter Hook-esque bass line (from Bruce if I remember correctly, a quite unashamed homage) A later version was recorded which can be found on Rarities IV (and also YouTube) The logo in the screen pic is also paying homage - it is from the A3 promo poster advertising Big Country's first gig as a 5-piece at the Glen Pavilion, Dunfermline, Thursday Feb 4, 1982 (tickets £1.25) - this hand drawn logo (with band pic and info) was the very first to promote a Big Country concert. Lyrics with only one or two very minor changes. The line starting ** - I cant work out precisely. I'm not even sure I hear 'dab' so any help with this line gratefully accepted. It's certainly not 'hold me down' as per the later version's lyrics which are here: https://bigcountryinfo.com/originals/... Edit: "calm me down..." as proposed by Tom S in the comments. Leave my kitchen Leave my bedroom Leave my fire Take out all the gaming sets That no one hired Break up all the boats Still tied up on the quay The meal is over now And all the children kissed When the bough breaks And the cradle it falls I will wake and sing Cover me with finest linen Every morning Bring me perfumes and tobacco Every morning Bathe my feet in Texan oils ** And calm me down The meal is over now And all the children kissed Strap the anchors to my neck And bathe with me When the bough breaks And the cradle is down I will wake and sing Jump from wall to wall On photographs of home In the wheat fields feeding beasts Have lost their barn Place them shaking on the table Show them steel The meal is over now And all the children kissed Store the relics Mend the cracks And hide the wheel When the bough breaks And the cradle is down I will wake and sing Dance on every wire here Fine little doll As you danced in other beds Before the fall Take the wings from airplanes And set them loose The carpenter has shown his skill And proved his use The meal is over now And all the children kissed Strap the anchors to my neck And bathe with me When the bough breaks And the cradle is down I will wake and sing Celebrating 40 years of Big Country - 1981 to 2021. Stay Alive!
