Simba is a traditional street performance in Senegal, happening in open squares and streets with no stage — just the open sky.It usually starts closer to the evening, when the city slows down and the sound of sabar drums gathers people around. This tradition began many centuries ago, in pre-colonial times. Originally, Simba was a ritual of strength and initiation, connected to protecting the community and the spirit world. Over time, it became a public street performance — but it still keeps its sacred meaning. Everything is built around the drum rhythm and the dancer’s altered state: he doesn’t just dance — he becomes a lion. Roaring, lunging forward, and making sharp jumps, he moves like a predator, playing with tension and fear. The crowd reacts instantly — stepping back, laughing, shouting — and the street turns into a living theater. Passed from generation to generation, Simba remains a powerful living tradition in Senegal: the lion is a symbol of strength, protection, and life energy.
