Mistranslations Built a Different Christianity Pt1

"Repent" is a mistranslation. So is "sacrifice," "fear," "sacrament," and dozens more — and every one was bent in the same direction. What we read in English came down through the Latin Vulgate, not the Greek the first Christians actually heard. Line up the load-bearing vocabulary of the New Testament — repent, faith, sin, sacrifice, sacrament, fear, forgiveness, debt — and every word leans the same way: toward the courtroom, the ledger, and the penalty, and never once toward relationship with God. By the most conservative count, it happens more than a hundred times. One word, metanoia — "change your mind, wake up" — became paenitentia, "do penance, bear the penalty." That single bend was the first of the 95 Theses that launched the Reformation. These are, in effect, two different religions. This is the diagnosis. Daniel walks the cards one at a time: hilastērion (the mercy seat, the place where God meets His people) turned into propitiatio (the appeasing of an angry God); mystērion (a mystery thrown open) turned into sacramentum (the Roman soldier's oath of loyalty to the emperor); opheilēma (what is owed) turned into debitum (a debt on a ledger). The fingerprint is the proof: the faithful Latin word already existed, and the same translator — Jerome, working in the orbit of Augustine — reached for it on the very next page, bending only where doctrine and power were at stake. Rome fused law and religion into a single profession; Lucretius and Seneca admitted their own language was too poor to carry an interior God; Rome had already branded the gospel superstitio before it translated a single letter of it.
