17th Week in Ordinary Time Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1st Reading (1 Kings 3:5, 7-12) Solomon's Prayer for Wisdom A reading from the First Book of Kings At Gibeon, the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at night. Then God said, "Ask for what I shall give you." And Solomon replied, "O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, and I am but a youth and do not know how to rule. Moreover, your servant is among your people whom you have chosen, a great people, who cannot be numbered or recorded for their multitude. Therefore, grant your servant an understanding heart to judge your people and to discern good from evil. For who can judge this great people of yours?" It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked for this very thing. So God said to him, "Since you have asked for this, and have not asked for long life or riches, and have not asked for the destruction of your enemies, but for knowledge in judgment, behold, I will grant you your desire by giving you a wise and understanding heart, such that none like you has been before you, nor will there be after you." 2nd Reading (Romans 8:28-30) God destined us to be conformed to the image of His Son A reading from the Letter of St. Paul the Apostle to the Romans Brothers: We know that in all things God works together for the good of those who love Him, to those who are called according to His purpose. When he found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all he had and bought it.” “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea, which caught fish of every kind. When it was full, they pulled it ashore and sat down. They gathered the good into vessels, but they threw away the bad. So it will be at the end of the world: the angels will come forth and sever the wicked from among the just and throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have you understood all this? They answered Him, "Yes."
