It all started with a comment I received from someone named Tomi / @tomi_experient "To disconnect the high-pressure, just undo the push-button on the one-touch coupler and loosen the high-pressure valve. It comes off easily. I always do it that way, but is there anything wrong with doing it this way?" Come to think of it, I used to do it that way when I first bought my car, but I somehow forgot and started using a regular quick coupler. [Making Effective Use of Control Valves] In addition to the standard quick coupler, the manifold gauge set also includes a coupler with control valve functionality. I used it when I first bought it, but since I only use cheap charge hoses and only perform this procedure about once every two or three years, I didn't see much point in using this valve, so I stopped using it. However, this control valve is extremely useful. First of all, even when connecting the quick coupler without pressing the control valve, there's no pressure, so the connection is almost stress-free. Similarly, it makes it easy to attach and detach the high-pressure pipe, and it even allows you to recover the refrigerant inside the high-pressure hose. [Air Purging Using a Push-in Valve] 1. With the push-in valve pulled (but not pressed), connect the hoses to the low and high-pressure valves. Since there is no pressure, gas will not leak and installation is stress-free and light. 2. Place a dedicated cover over the charge hose connection. On some models, this also serves as a protective cover for the air purge valve. 3. As you tighten the push-in valve handle, the valve at the connection opens, applying pressure to the hose, as displayed on the gauge. With the air conditioner off and sufficient gas, the pressure should be around 7 MPa at early summer temperatures. 4. Open the low-pressure valve and push the air purge valve to perform an air purge. Perform the same procedure on the high-pressure side. [Recovering Refrigerant from the High-Pressure Hose] Because the high-pressure hose is connected to the high-pressure pipe, the pressure inside is extremely high—1.5 to 2 MPa (15 to 20 atmospheres)—and some liquid refrigerant is mixed in. Therefore, attempting to remove the hose without applying pressure requires significant force and is dangerous. Furthermore, any liquid refrigerant remaining in the high-pressure hose that was forcibly removed will evaporate and release gas for approximately 30 seconds. Turn off the air conditioner and wait for a while until the pressure drops to 7 MPa before removing the quick coupler. However, with a control valve, not only can you quickly remove the valve without this step, but you can also recover the refrigerant remaining in the high-pressure hose. 1. Release the coupling on the high-pressure pipe and shut off the high-pressure pipe and hose. 2. With the air conditioner running, open both the high- and low-pressure valves and recover the refrigerant in the high-pressure hose through the low-pressure hose into the air conditioning circuit. At this time, slightly revving the engine will increase the compressor's speed, allowing for more efficient recovery. The pressure in the gauge circuit will then be approximately 0.2 MPa, the same as in the low-pressure pipe. 3. Release the coupling on the low-pressure pipe and shut off the low-pressure pipe and hose. 4. Open the air purge valve to remove the refrigerant from the appliance and equalize it with atmospheric pressure. This allows the hose coupler to be removed easily and with little force. ★ Caution!! Different refrigerants have different ozone depletion potential (ODP) values. If the old R12 (CFC) is considered to be 1, R22 (HCFC) is 0.055, and more recent HFCs such as R134a, R32, and R410A are 0. So while they do not deplete the ozone layer, they do contribute to global warming. Releasing refrigerants into the atmosphere is prohibited by law, so please ask a professional to recover the refrigerant.
