Edom, Moab y Amón: Avanzar También Exige Respetar Límites | Deuteronomio 2:2–30
In this daily aliyah from the parashah Devarim, we study Deuteronomy 2:2–30, where Moses recounts how YHWH commanded Israel to advance after circling Mount Seir for a long time. The passage teaches that the conquest of the Promised Land did not authorize Israel to take any territory. Obedience to the covenant included advancing, but also respecting the boundaries established by YHWH. Israel was to pass near the descendants of Esau in Seir, but not provoke them or take their land. YHWH had given that region to Edom as an inheritance. Israel could buy food and water, but not appropriate the territory. This is fundamental: the God who gives land to Israel also recognizes inheritances given to other peoples. The promise does not equate to unlimited expansion. The same applies to Moab and Ammon, descendants of Lot. Israel was not to attack or take their lands, because YHWH had given them as a possession. This detail requires a more careful reading of the conquest. The Torah does not present Israel as a people with a universal right to occupy everything they find. Their inheritance is defined by divine mandate. The text mentions ancient peoples such as the Emim, Anakites, and Rephaim, showing that the region's territorial history extends beyond Israel. Deuteronomy places Israel within a complex historical context, where other peoples also experienced migrations, inheritances, and conflicts. The Torah does not oversimplify ancient geopolitics; it interprets it under the sovereignty of YHWH. After thirty-eight years, the previous generation of warriors had disappeared from the camp. This fact connects the advance with the fulfillment of judgment. Israel does not resume its journey simply because it decided to move forward, but because the time of the judgment had come to an end. The new stage begins after the previous disobedience has run its course. When Israel reaches the territory of Sihon, king of Heshbon, the situation changes. YHWH begins to grant that territory to Israel, but Moses initiates the process by requesting peaceful passage. This shows that war does not arise as a first impulsive option. Sihon hardens his heart and becomes an adversary of Israel's advance. The context of the ancient Near East helps to understand the passage. Routes, rights of way, water purchases, relationships between related peoples, and territorial disputes were decisive matters for survival. Deuteronomy interprets this political reality from the perspective of obedience: Israel cannot confuse strategic necessity with divine permission. The connection with Yeshua must be made without anachronisms. The passage does not speak directly of him, but it establishes categories of the Kingdom: boundaries, obedience, respect for what is entrusted to others, discernment, and advancing under command. The Kingdom of God is not boundless religious ambition; it is God's rule over desires, territories, times, and decisions. The formative application is clear. Many confuse promise with permission to invade spaces that God did not give them. Deuteronomy 2 teaches that advancing in obedience requires knowing where to enter and where not to touch. Boundaries are not always opposition; Sometimes it's part of the mandate.
