Utah immigration attorney says vehicle stops by ICE are 'one of the most used tools'

President Donald Trump says Immigration and Customs Enforcement should continue using traffic stops as part of its immigration enforcement strategy, appearing to reverse a reported Department of Homeland Security directive issued just a day earlier to pause most vehicle stops after two fatal shootings involving ICE officers. In a Truth Social post Wednesday, Trump praised ICE officers and called traffic stops one of the agency's "most important and effective" crime-fighting tools, saying officers should return to using the tactic while being "judicious, fair and smart." The post came after multiple national news organizations reported DHS had directed ICE officers to suspend most vehicle stops following fatal encounters in Maine and Texas while the incidents were reviewed. Hours after Trump's post, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the administration remained committed to arresting and deporting people in the country illegally, signaling the administration intended to continue aggressive immigration enforcement.
