I've paid $3,500 for a fake IWC watch. And yes, I am a watchmaker and a watch dealer !
This is a true story. In the early 1980s, the Swiss watchmaking industry was on its knees. The onslaught of the Japanese quartz watch era was unbearable, and Swiss brands were grasping for their last breath. In a final attempt to retain their market presence in America, executives from the top brands gathered in the New York office of a leading advertising firm, waiting for a miracle. The atmosphere in the room was somber. The executives were uncomfortably quiet. Finally, a cocky advertising director, sensing blood, turned to the Rolex representative. “So, how’s the watch business, Mr. Rolex?” The old-timer was put on the spot. He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t blink. Calmly, he said: “Watch business? I wouldn’t know. Rolex isn’t in the watch business. We’re in the luxury business.” We are not in the watch business either. We are in the business of preserving, advancing, and passing on our trade to the next generation. The watches we repair and make are merely the objects of our activity. We are in the business of saying thank you for your business — a business called, “We are here to serve you.” In this video, we are opening our books — real watches, real prices. Are watches a good investment? Well, that fake IWC definitely was not. The rabbit hole of vintage Russian hand-painted dials is a deep one. Today, we are handling a family heirloom orphan.
