Vera and Anna have nothing in common… Nothing but a shared mystery – they’re haunted by the same ghost – once an ex-husband, love of their lives, now their trouble, their delusion. Having lived with Denis for five happy years, Vera discovers their idyll is over – she suspects her husband of infidelity. The feelings are unfamiliar, but Vera doesn’t immediately understand that something’s off. A vague memory hints at the root cause – a few years ago, Denis left his first wife Anna to marry Vera. Vera’s sure the old proverb became an ominous prophecy, “It’s impossible to build one’s own happiness on the unhappiness of others”. To sort out her past once and for all, determined Vera goes to her husband’s first wife with an intent to talk to the only woman in the whole world that had an exactly the same experience with Denis. Vera finds out the shocking truth that Anna is confined to a wheelchair. And Vera is the reason why. Five years ago, because of the breakup, Anna developed depression and had to take antidepressants to counter her terrible mental condition, however, the side effects triggered a sleepwalking disorder so bad she got ran over by a car. Vera is devastated; although it’s not the whole truth yet. The second part is no less shocking – for all these five years Denis has been financially supporting his ex-wife; Anna is an excellent economist having once helped Denis get his business off the ground; she still consults him and does analytical work from home. Vera is shaken. For five years, her husband has been keeping their relationship with his ex-wife in secret from her. Even if it’s nothing but friendship, Vera didn’t know anything about it. Which can mean that Denis might be leading (and in fact he does!) a double life. Denis is actually in love and eventually breaks up with Vera leaving her alone with her grief. When she suddenly realizes that she’s not the only one suffering here and there is another person in need of an actual help – Anna. Vera sets a goal to cure her former rival. Both women are fighting “phantom pains” in their own way, falling in love, building new relationships and trying to start a new life. They’re so different and both go their own ways.
