The Changing Outlook on Photographic Road Trips & Robin De Puy
THIS VIDEO: In this video I’m going to look at a project by Dutch photographer and national portrait prize winner Robin de Puy. I’ll link this exploration with a look at how the attitudes towards road trip photography and documentary photography as a whole have evolved. Critics look back on photographers from the 1930s like Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange and consider their claim of being neutral, objective observers as being naïve. The argument is that photographers as authors bring all their biases to their practice. Since that time, we’ve seen dramatic transformations within photography as society has attempted to modify how photographers record other people. I’ll argue that largely these attempts haven’t altered the final outcome very much…and my opinion is that the photographer’s intent is possibly the most reliable measure of respect or empathy. Robert Frank in the 1950's set the framework for all the road trips that followed. He didn’t want his work to be neutral – it was more of a rage against the machine. 1-on-1 MENTORING: https://graemewilliams.co.za/mentor-p... Buymeacoffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/graemewi...
