Why Does ㅅ Appear Between Words? (사이시옷) | Korean FAQ

Have you ever noticed the “ㅅ” in the middle of some words, at the bottom of one of the syllables? For example, in the word 고춧가루 (“red pepper flakes”), have you ever wondered what that ㅅ is doing after 고추 (“red pepper”)? This is called the 사이시옷 (“between 시옷”) and is used to connect two nouns into a new compound noun. In this video I talk about what it is and how to use it, and give some common examples.
