How Did The Aztec Empire Fall
Five hundred Spanish soldiers didn't topple an empire of millions. A quarter-million Indigenous warriors who despised Aztec rule did — and Cortés just showed up at the right time. The Aztec Triple Alliance ruled through fear, not loyalty, demanding tribute of gold, food, and captives from conquered cities under threat of fire and sacrifice. When a bearded stranger landed on the coast in 1519 with an army of only 500 men, 16 horses, and a few cannons, most cities didn't see an invader — they saw a chance for revenge. The Tlaxcalans, boxed in and starved by the Aztecs for decades, tried to kill Cortés first, fought him in three brutal battles, then joined him with tens of thousands of warriors. By the time the combined force reached Tenochtitlan, it was mostly Indigenous — and Emperor Moctezuma II had to decide whether to fight or let them walk in.
