The Members 'Solitary Confinement' live 1979
The Members with a rousing performance of 'Solitary Confinement', their debut single. First released in 1978 for Stiff Records, they re-recorded it for their 1979 album - which also featured their hit song 'Sound of the Suburbs' - after being signed by Virgin. Singer Nicky Tesco sadly died in February 2022. Co-writer and guitarist JC Carroll together with Chris Payne continue with the band inbetween other projects, on occasion featuring the other original members. After Nicky Tesco left the band in 1983 he became a producer, and his way with words led him to become a writer, for Music Week, Vive Le Rock and others. His popular lengthy Facebook posts displayed an articulate political analysis, entertaining while kicking against injustices. He also worked as an actor, starring in (alongside Jim Jarmusch) and recording for, the Finnish deadpan surreal comedy 'The Leningrad Cowboys Go America' and its sequel film, amongst others. The song was repurposed with new lyrics by the Newtown Neurotics as 'Living with Unemployment' in the 1980's, also an indie chart hit. In the 2020-21 pandemic it was unearthed by a French TV station, who said: - "it resonates with the isolation we have been living for over a year. Like a hymn to face these difficult days... ".
