The Tucson Mass Shooting Headline Didn’t Tell The Whole Story
Ten people were shot in downtown Tucson, and the words on the screen said “mass shooting.” But then the actual report started giving details — and the story got a lot more complicated. According to Tucson Police, this was not some random attack by a stranger who woke up planning to kill innocent people. Police said it was two groups of people who knew each other, already in a confrontation before the shooting happened. That detail matters. Because when most people hear “mass shooting,” they picture a school, a mall, a concert, or one person targeting strangers at random. But the way these shootings are counted is much broader than that. Depending on the database, if four or more people are shot in one incident, it can get labeled a mass shooting — even if it started as a beef between people who knew each other, at two in the morning, outside a pizza spot. That is how very different kinds of violence get flattened into one category. And once that label gets attached, the story becomes a data point. The data point goes into a chart. The chart shows up in a hearing. And the policy response is almost always the same: More gun control. But this Tucson case exposes the problem. The report said police were already downtown because there were a lot of people in the area. When the shooting started, officers ran over, engaged the suspect, and stopped him before he could escape. That is about as close to the best-case version of “let the professionals handle it” as you can get. The professionals were nearby. They responded fast. They engaged the threat. And nine people still got shot. That is not an attack on those officers. They moved toward danger and likely kept the number from getting worse. But it does destroy the idea that ordinary people should be helpless until help arrives. If armed officers already in the area cannot prevent every round from being fired, why is the woman walking to her car at 2 a.m. supposed to be satisfied with nothing but a phone? We still do not know every detail. Police have not released the suspect’s identity or where the gun came from, so anybody claiming one specific law would have stopped this is guessing. But we do know this: The facts said two groups who knew each other. The chyron said mass shooting. And the chyron is the part that travels. Nine people were critically injured, and that is real. I hope every one of them makes it home. But when one phrase gets stretched across completely different kinds of violence, we end up writing laws for a story that did not happen — while the story that did happen keeps repeating itself.
