【shinkansen】 The Shinkansen railway is defined as "a trunk railway whose main section is capable of traveling at a high speed of 200 km / h (hereinafter referred to as km / h) or more" (Article 2). Since it is the "main section", it is a Shinkansen railway even if there is a section that can travel locally at a speed of less than 200 km / h. The Shinkansen is defined by law because it requires different operating rules and structural rules (both are ministerial ordinances) from conventional lines. Beginning with the Tokaido Shinkansen, which opened between Tokyo Station and Shin-Osaka Station on October 1, 1964, the Sanyo, Tohoku, and Joetsu Shinkansen opened during the JNR era. After the transition to JR, two lines, Yamagata and Akita, will open as mini-shinkansen that operate directly between the conventional JR line (conventional line) and the Shinkansen, and the original Shinkansen standard (full standard) that enables high-speed operation. However, the expansion of the Shinkansen network has continued for half a century, with the opening of three routes: Hokkaido, Hokuriku, and Kyushu (Kagoshima route).
