A Broke Ex-Fighter Finds a Junkyard Robot — Not Realizing It Could Change Everything

"In the near future, human boxing is dead — replaced by giant robots that tear each other apart for sport. Charlie Kenton is a former fighter who never quite made it, and he's been stumbling ever since: no money, no robot, and a string of bad bets catching up with him fast. Then two things happen at once. His last bot gets destroyed by a bull at a county fair, and a lawyer shows up to tell him he has an eleven-year-old son he's never met. Through a deal that says a lot about his character, Charlie ends up spending the summer with the kid — and the kid, it turns out, is not someone you can push around. Together they pull a battered old sparring robot out of a junkyard, clean him up, and start entering him in fights he has no business winning. Adam — that's the robot — keeps surprising people. So does the kid.
