Relive the magic of Jazz legends Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Lester Young, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Django Reinhardt, Lionel Hampton, Eddie Condon, Count Basie and many more. Travel back in time to the Golden Age of Jazz with us! Eleanora Fagan, known as Billie Holiday or “Lady Day” (Philadelphia, April 7, 1915 – New York, July 17, 1959), was one of the greatest singers in jazz history. The way she altered the melodic line of songs closely resembled the style of the best instrumentalists of her time, who indeed participated with enthusiasm in the recording of her albums. Holiday began her singing career at 15. In 1935, she began working with impromptu bands under the direction of pianist Teddy Wilson. Before the war, she worked with the orchestras of Count Basie and Arvell Shaw, then continued her career as a soloist. In 1947, she acted and sang in the film “New Orleans” alongside Louis Armstrong. Ella Jane Fitzgerald (Newport News, 25 April, 1917 – Beverly Hills, 15 June, 1996), also known as “The First Lady of Song”, was one of the most extraordinary voices of the 20th century. Always flawless no matter what genre she was singing, from the most romantic ballads to the most infectious scat improvisations, she has left a vast legacy of recordings. Launched at a very young age by drummer Chick Webb’s orchestra, which she led after his death, Ella almost immediately garnered immense success with “A-Tisket, A-Tasket”. In the early 40s, also thanks to the guidance of her husband, double bass player Ray Brown, she joined the avant-garde movement of be-bop. Her series of “songbooks”, in-depth and definitive interpretations of outstanding songs by the most prominent songwriters such as George Gerschwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, etc., became widely renowned. Mildred Eleanor Rinker Bailey (Tekoa, February 27, 1927 – Poughkeepsie, December 12, 1951) was one of the first jazz singers. From 1929 to 1933 she performed with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, then led a group that garnered reasonable success with her husband, xylophonist Red Norvo, until its disbandment in 1939. During the war years she continued her brilliant musical career, and even had a radio show to her name. In 1945, her activities were curtailed by health problems and eventually came to a halt two years before her death. Her sublime singing in “Rocking Chair” earned her the nickname “Rockin’ Chair Lady”. Ivie Anderson (Giroy, July 10, 1905 – Los Angeles, December 28, 1949) mostly owes her fame to her long tenure in the Duke Ellington Orchestra (1932-1942). Before joining his big band, she collaborated for almost ten years with the orchestras of Paul Howard, Curtis Mosby, Sonny Clay and Earl Hines. Ivie made a name for herself with Ellington thanks to her very unique style, that Duke masterfully incorporated into his extremely personal sound. Unfortunately, chronic health problems forced her to leave the band at the peak of her career. The first recorded version of “Stormy Weather” (1939), the famous song by Harold Arlen born at the “Cotton Club” in New York during her time with Ellington, was only instrumental, but this second version does it fully justice. “I Got It Bad (and That Ain’t Good)” is a widely popular Ellington hit written for the musical “Jump for Joy”.
