My Bees Went Silent This Week — Walking Through a Real Summer Dearth With Me

I walked out to my apiary at seven thirty this morning with my coffee like I do every day. And I noticed something before I even reached the first hive. The air was quiet. Two weeks ago this same walk was alive with foragers. This morning the traffic was thinner. The urgency was gone. What I was walking into is a summer dearth — the period when the main nectar flow ends and the fall flow has not yet begun. In this video I take you through my apiary exactly as I walked it this morning. Fourteen hives in a row. Six stops. Each one showing a different piece of what dearth looks like in practice and what I actually do about it. You will see a hive with no incoming pollen, a hive under active robbing attack, a technique called hefting that lets you check a colony's food stores in three seconds without opening the hive, a real feeding decision with the exact syrup ratio and timing, and a thriving colony that shows what strength looks like during dearth. Based on twenty years of beekeeping experience and research from leading apicultural institutions.
