The Real Danger of Motorcycle Travel

Not Everyone Is Ready for Mountain Roads | S7 EP13 Tonight’s episode is a reminder that motorcycle travel in Australia isn’t always about distance, heat and outback tracks. In Tasmania, the danger can be mountain roads, blind hairpins, smoke, fire, wildlife, loose gravel, or other road users who are not prepared for the conditions. Some days it is the road. Some days it is the weather. Some days it is smoke, fire, wildlife, blind corners, loose gravel, or the person coming the other way who has completely underestimated the road they are driving on. We rode out of Launceston and into the heart of Tasmania, taking the long scenic route through the Great Lakes towards Cradle Mountain. It started as one of those beautiful adventure riding days — open landscapes, quiet roads, huge skies and that feeling of being properly out there. But as the road tightened and climbed towards the mountains, the day changed. Small forest fires burned beside the road. Smoke drifted through the trees. Then, on one of the hairpins near Cradle Mountain, we came across a car crash. It did not involve us, but it stopped us in our tracks. Because when you travel by motorcycle, you are exposed to everything. You can ride carefully, read the road, slow down for the corners and still be reminded that danger does not always come from you. It can come from other road users, from nature, from conditions changing faster than expected, or from people driving roads they are not prepared for. This was still a beautiful ride through Tasmania, but it was also one of those days that makes you respect the road a little more.
