El Corrido de Gregorio Cortez - LA VERDADERA HISTORIA - (Desde el Lugar de los hechos)

From Karnes County, we bring you the true story of Gregorio Cortez, his pursuit by the Texas Rangers, the pursuit of the Texas Rangers, and Gregorio's capture and imprisonment in Gonzales, Texas, from where we bring you this story with historical information we acquired and will be sharing with you. Gregorio Cortez and his brother were sitting talking in front of their house when a horse-drawn carriage (express) with the Sheriff and his assistant interpreter arrived. The interpreter made two critical errors in his interpretation due to his limited Spanish proficiency, and problems immediately arose. First, he unintentionally translated in a provocative tone that Cortez had just traded a horse in town, to which Cortez replied no. It was true. Cortez had traded a mare, not a horse. Not understanding the word "mare," the interpreter told the Sheriff that he was denying it. The Sheriff told him, "We're going to arrest you!" Cortez responded, "Why are you going to arrest me if I haven't done anything?" The interpreter translated, "He says no one can arrest him!" At which point the Sheriff pulled out his gun and killed Cortez's brother. Gregorio pulled out his gun and killed the Sheriff. And so begins...this story...
