Have you ever seen a small amount of extra track extending beyond a station? This extra track is called a safety siding, an important piece of equipment that holds profound value when it comes to understanding the history of safety. (With the advancement of safety device improvements, more and more stations are omitting safety sidings.) The turnouts installed at the entrance to safety sidings can be either regular turnouts or over-pass turnouts. Both have their pros and cons. Taking into account the time required for restoration work in the event of a train entering the safety siding, a regular turnout plus safety siding is often used. This video focuses on over-pass turnouts and safety sidings on Seibu Railway. While safety sidings are often associated with single-track interchange stations, they are also installed on double-track lines at passing stations and at stations with level crossings.
