Rep. Garcia says ICE director confirms agents stopped, killed wrong man during traffic stop in Texas

Texas Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia says acting ICE Director David J. Venturella told her on the phone that ICE stopped and shot the wrong man during a traffic stop in Houston. The driver, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was shot and killed when an ICE officer opened fire through a passenger-side window on Tuesday. The Department of Homeland Security says Salgado Araujo ignored commands and rammed his white van into an ICE vehicle before the officer fired in self-defense. But three other men who were inside the van during the deadly confrontation are now challenging that version of events. A lawyer who spoke with the men have been detained since says Salgado Araujo was shot through the passenger-side window — and that the ICE officer was never threatened. Garcia says ICE’s acting director told her officers were actually looking for someone else in the van, not Salgado Araujo, who they believed had a final order of removal. Garcia says officials did not provide the name of the person they were actually looking for. She also says the officers were not wearing body cameras during the incident.
