Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (PC Engine CD) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Banpresto's 1994 license-based visual novel for the PC Engine Super CDROM2 system, Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (美少女戦士セーラームーン). Played through as Sailor Moon. Though this was a Japanese-only release, a patch was recently released that translates the entire game into English. If you are interested in playing it for yourself, you can find more information at http://stargood.org/trans/bssm_pcecd.php Rather than making yet another versus-fighter, beat 'em up, or puzzle game based on the series, Banpresto did something pretty unexpected for the Sailor Moon franchise's first Super CD ROM ROM game: they created a menu-driven "interactive" adventure game. It's often referred to as a digital comic (think Yumimi Mix), and that's a fairly accurate description. The game features a newly-penned story that takes place directly following the end of the Doom Tree story arc of the Sailor Moon R season, introducing a brand new (and fairly gross and disturbing) villain mastermind who is after the silver crystal so that he can sap all of the energy from the people of Tokyo. After choosing your preferred sailor scout, the story will unfold over several chapters through some "choose your own adventure" style plot-branching prompts and minigames. The stories and minigames change based on who you are playing as - some scenes are unique to certain characters, but all of the paths converge at certain points, creating a fair amount of overlap in scenes. Everything is done through a combination of text boxes, voice-overs, and animated cutscenes. These aren't FMV like you'd expect in a modern game - rather, they are closer to what we used to see for intro cutscene animation on the Sega CD and TurboCD, in games like Lunar or Cosmic Fantasy 2. The big thing is that they aren't used for occasional moments - they make up the majority of the in-game graphics, and they look great. Granted, the animation is limited, but even after being adapted to such a low resolution, the artwork still looks like it was pulled directly from the show! The sound is even more impressive than the graphics, though. These aren't any second-rate voice impersonations here: the original actors provided their talents for this production, and their presence makes the entire game feel like a legitimate, official extension of the show. The game also had a couple new songs written for it, both of which fit pretty well. They sound like they are performed by same singers that did the live concerts - does anyone know if they are or not? If you don't know (or don't like) Sailor Moon, I doubt this will appeal to you. If you're a fan, though, the lavish production values and sense of authenticity pretty much guarantee that you'll love it, especially now that it has been paired with such a quality translation effort. _____________ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
