Andrew Scheps uses a '90s pop parallel vocal chain with EQ into LA-2A

Andrew Scheps walks through his template vocal chain, based on a '90s East Coast pop approach, run in parallel for control without changing tone. He removes low end, boosts around 8 kHz, then hits a compressor like an LA-2A, so detection responds to mid-range only. After compression, he restores low end and adds 20 kHz with Pultec-style EQ, then blends a small amount to raise vocal audibility. Eight metal producers, Jens Bogren, Mike Exeter, Adam "Nolly" Getgood, Josh Middleton, Fredrik Nordström, Buster Odeholm, Dave Otero, and Andrew Scheps, each mixed the same five-minute song and were interviewed about what heaviness means to them. The interviews and mix walkthroughs are on this channel; the full research is in Heaviness in Metal Music Production, Volumes I and II (Routledge). Principal investigators: Dr Jan Herbst and Dr Mark Mynett, University of Huddersfield. Funded by the AHRC (grant AH/T010991/1).
