In 1934, the gates of the Henschel factory in Kassel opened to reveal the Henschel Type 33 D1 — a truck that would become one of Germany’s most enduring military machines. This three-axle 6×4 vehicle was built for strength and survival, powered by a 10.8-litre Henschel Type D engine producing 100 horsepower and around 475 newton-metres of torque. Weighing 8.5 tonnes and capable of carrying 3 tonnes of cargo, the D1 was the mechanical backbone of the Wehrmacht. More than 6,000 units rolled across Europe, Africa, and the Eastern Front — hauling artillery, fuel, and supplies through mud, snow, and sand. Its reliability made it legendary among drivers, who often repaired it with basic tools in the field.
