Mató a un Hombre a los 16, Fue Capo de la Mafia Mexicana y Recibió Morfina de la DEA | Joe Morgan
He killed a man at 16. Years later, he became one of the most influential figures in the Mexican Mafia from behind a prison cell. And just when his story seemed complete, the secret that could have condemned him within La EMe emerged: a wig, a federal trailer, DEA agents… and morphine. This true crime documentary tells the story of Joe “Pegleg” Morgan, also known as Cocoliso: a white man, the son of Croatian immigrants, who grew up in Boyle Heights, joined a Chicano gang, and ended up connected to the dark power of the Mexican Mafia. He wasn't a cartel boss. He didn't rule from mansions, armed caravans, or hidden ranches. But from prison, he moved money, drugs, alliances, and orders that reached the streets of Los Angeles. Without needing an official title, Morgan became a feared figure within prison gangs, organized crime, and the California prison system. At 16, he committed a murder that marked the beginning of a life spent almost entirely in prison, surrounded by violence and secrets. Later, he lost a leg during a bank robbery, returned to prison, and used his prosthetic leg as a criminal tool: inside it, he hid hacksaw blades and a lock pick to escape from the Los Angeles County Jail along with eleven other men. Over time, Joe Morgan became the first white "carnal" in the history of La EMe. His influence extended throughout San Quentin, Pelican Bay, Corcoran, East Los Angeles, the Sureños, and the power networks that connected prison, drug trafficking, and the streets. But the most disturbing part came in 1975. According to documents and accounts that surfaced years later, Morgan was taken to a federal trailer, wore a wig to avoid being recognized, received morphine from federal agents, and was photographed with a DEA agent. There was also a court order in place to move him to a protected location, the kind of move typically associated with witnesses. So a question remains that still hangs over his name: Was Joe “Pegleg” Morgan really the white godfather of the Mexican Mafia… or did La Eme never uncover the secret that could have turned him into an informant? This episode explores the murder he committed at age 16, his rise within the Mexican Mafia, his escape with a prosthetic leg, the ban on drive-by shootings in East Los Angeles, the American Me controversy, the revelations of Rene “Boxer” Enriquez, and the DEA mystery that Morgan took to his grave.
