Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, was a legendary 1/2-mile, high-banked D-shaped dirt track known for its "black gumbo" clay. Established originally in Dallas in 1937, it found its permanent Mesquite home in 1967 and became a staple of the American racing scene. It notably hosted the inaugural World of Outlaws race in 1978.Key Historical Milestones1937: The track originated in Dallas as a 1/4-mile dirt oval for midget racing, but closed temporarily during World War II.1967: The speedway was relocated to Lawson Road in Mesquite, Texas, and transformed into the D-shaped track known today.1978: On March 18, Devil's Bowl hosted the very first event for the newly formed World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series. California driver Jimmy Boyd won this historic inaugural race.1973–2023: For half a century, the track was owned and operated by Lanny and Beverly Edwards, hosting legendary racing seasons and annual events like the Winter Nationals.Track Legacy and ClosureHailed as the "Southwest's most famous dirt track," the speedway was uniquely banked, with the backstretch curve sitting 15 feet higher than the frontstretch, giving fans excellent, unobstructed views. The venue drew the biggest names in sprint car racing for decades.Despite a petition from fans to Preserve the Legacy of Devil's Bowl Speedway, the property was sold, and the iconic track held its final checkered flag event in October of 2023 with the World of Outlaws.
