Roger Williams: The Champion of Soul Liberty
In Episode 2 of Champions of Faith and Freedom, we explore the remarkable life of Roger Williams (c. 1603–1683), one of the most important defenders of religious liberty in early American history. An ordained minister and outspoken advocate for freedom of conscience, Williams challenged the religious and political authorities of Massachusetts Bay Colony. He argued that government should not control matters of faith and that Native Americans deserved fair treatment and just compensation for their lands. His beliefs led to banishment, forcing him into the wilderness during the harsh winter of 1635–1636. Yet from that exile emerged a revolutionary vision. In 1636, Williams founded Providence Plantations, later part of Rhode Island, as a refuge where people could worship according to their conscience without fear of persecution. Roger Williams helped establish the first Baptist church in America and became a powerful voice for what he called "soul liberty"—the belief that every person is accountable to God alone in matters of faith. Discover the story of the man whose courage, convictions, and commitment to liberty helped lay the foundation for one of America's most cherished freedoms: religious liberty.
