Initially, there were no instruments; the four friends (Daniel Johns, Chris Joannou, Ben Gillies, and Tobin Finanne) only played raps, which was just a joke. Daniel decided to buy a guitar, leading Tobin to buy his, making him the second guitarist. Ben played drums, and Chris played bass. They were all very young, and the rehearsals were truly inaudible. Daniel Johns screamed lyrics of hatred and pain at the top of his lungs, and none of the other members had much familiarity with their instruments; the name "Innocent Criminals" was truly a faithful reflection of the band. Some time later, Tobin moved to England, leaving the band. The band's first shows were basically covers of bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and other dinosaurs of 70s rock.
