Then Moses led the Israelites away from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they walked three days in the desert, and found no water. Then they came to Marah; but they could not drink the waters of Marah, because they were bitter; that is why the place was called Mara. And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? And he cried unto the Lord: and the Lord showed him a tree; and he cast it into the waters; and the waters were made sweet. There he gave them statutes and an ordinance, and there he tested them. And he said, If thou wilt diligently hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases upon thee, which I brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord who heals you. Then they came to Elim, and there were twelve springs of water there and seventy palm trees; and there they camped by the waters.
