In August 2024, a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. It shook the soul of the city as thousands took to the streets demanding justice and questioning the government on women’s safety. While the case lies in court, it has emerged as a major poll issue in West Bengal where state elections are currently underway. The BBC’s Ishadrita Lahiri and Devesh Chopra spoke to women in Kolkata about how the incident has shaped their sense of safety in the city.
