Is Seoul's Daerim-dong Really Dangerous? (Daerim-dong)

This neighborhood has a remarkable image. On my announcement to visit, I received reactions like ‘it’s dangerous,’ ‘wear a knife vest,’ ‘it’s scary,’ and the list goes on. It didn’t stop me from going, and guess what? I loved it. So here we go, Daerim-dong, the unofficial Chinatown of Seoul, as they say. In the early 90s Chinese work immigrants settled nearby factories in Guro and Garibong. After redevelopment was undertaken, those people moved to neighboring Daerim-dong. Guided by a French girl Mia, whom herself has lived in Daerim for almost a year, we explored street by street. Watch to video to see what we discovered and who we talked to. Welcome to my dong. 이 동네는 아주 특이한 이미지를 갖고 있습니다. 제가 대림동에 간다는 공지를 올렸을 때 '위험하다', '방검복 입어라', '무섭다' 등등의 반응들을 많이 받았어요. 그렇다고 안 갈 수는 없었죠. 근데 이게 웬걸? 아주 즐거웠어요. 다들 대림동을 비공식 차이나타운이라고 부르곤 해요. 90년대 중국인 노동이민자들이 구로와 가리봉동에 있는 공장들 근처에 정착하기 시작했고, 재개발 이후 근처인 대림동으로 많이 이사하게 되었다고 합니다. 대림동에서 1년 넘게 살고 있다는 프랑스 여자인 미아의 안내를 따라, 골목 골목을 탐험해 봤어요. 우리가 발견한 것들과 이야기한 사람들이 궁금하다면 영상을 시청해주세요. 웰컴 투 마이 동.
