Solving Rational Equations: Two Methods
In this lesson, students learn two methods for solving rational equations. Some equations can be solved by cross multiplying when one rational expression equals another. Other equations require combining rational expressions first before cross multiplying. Students also learn how to solve rational equations by multiplying every term by the least common denominator (LCD). The lesson also emphasizes checking for extraneous solutions. Students verify that their answers do not make a denominator equal zero and that the original rational expressions remain equal after substitution.
