Inside the Crowder, MO tornado (EF3) - May 16, 2025

On May 16, 2025, the OTUS project used specially designed drones to collect scientific data inside of a tornado as it passed through Crowder, MO. This tornado caused fires, downed powerlines, and destroyed structures in the town before momentarily dissipating. Tragically, the same tornado would go on to claim two lives just a few miles to the east. Two drones simultaneously entered this tornado to sample the environment. OTUS has an FAA-approved waiver to fly drones in tornadoes. Pilot: Louis Tucker Engineer: Tanner Beard Project lead: Nelson Tucker Storm chaser: Erik Fox For licensing, contact [email protected].
