Harvesting broad beans and wondering what to do with an empty patch in July? Before you grab a fork or spade, stop! In this episode, I show you why you shouldn't pull broad bean roots out of the ground. You'll see root nodules up close – natural, miniature nitrogen factories that, if left in the soil, will provide a powerful, free "kick" for subsequent crops. On this prepared, nitrogen-rich site, we'll plan an intensive and carefully planned catch crop together. I'm showing my mixed (intercropping) crop in a 120 cm wide patch: 🌱 Brussels sprouts as the main crop – planted in two rows (25 cm from the edge, every 50 cm in the row), which will utilize the full nitrogen potential of the broad beans. 🥬 Lettuce as a clever catch crop – planted between the Brussels sprouts. The growing brassicas will provide much-needed shade, protecting them from the scorching summer sun and the eruption of flowering stems. 🥗 Centering the bed for arugula and mustard greens – sow them along the bed (in two rows 20 cm apart). Since these vegetables are from the same family as Brussels sprouts, protecting them from pests (e.g., whiteflies or caterpillars) will be super easy because we'll cover them together! 🏵️ Marigold to say goodbye to summer – sow them at the edges of the bed. They will bloom in September and create a stunning visual contrast with the green Brussels sprouts, decorating the vegetable garden until November!
