Rotary Drift: Group B Mazda RX7 Tribute

In 1984 Mazda Rally Team Europe (MRTE) jumped from group 2 to B with the first gen FB RX7. Although the car was uncompetitive, Mazda hoped to gain publicity from the fan crazy group B era. 20 evolution models were built for homologation featuring wider fender flares, upgraded suspension and a large rear spoiler. A high revving (11,000 rpm redline), naturally aspirated 13B rotary engine produced 300 bhp/366 nm and the kerb weight was 960 kg. Notable drivers were Achim Warmbold (also MRTE manager), Ingvar Carlsson, Neil Allport, Rod Millen and Minna Sillankorva. The RX7’s best result was a third place from Ingvar Carlsson in the 1985 Acropolis rally.
