Portuguese Hypermarkets vs. US Super Stores. Who does it better?

We've watched probably a dozen videos of European World Cup tourists walking into US supermarkets, jaws dropped, acting like they've never seen a building that large in their lives. And every single time, we look at each other and ask: Have these people actually been to a Continente or an Auchan in Portugal? Because as retired Gen X'ers who have shopped in both countries extensively, we can tell you with confidence: Portuguese stores are just as big, and the selection is vastly superior. American stores win on square footage of junk food. They have endless aisles of soda, frozen pizzas, and sugary cereals. But if you want real variety—fresh, local, artisanal food? Portugal leaves the US in the dust. We're talking entire sections for bacalhau (cod) preparations, shelves of locally-produced cheeses you've never heard of, and produce that actually has flavor. In this video, we take you on a tour of a major Portuguese grocery store and compare it to our decades of US shopping. The World Cup fans are wowed by size—but we think they're looking at the wrong things. #WorldCup #PortugalLiving #ExpatCouple #GroceryHaul #RetiredInPortugal #GenX #EuropeanFood #SupermarketWars #USA #expatlife #portugal #porto #continente_pt #dayinthelife
