Building RC Schooner Irene
Irene is a radio controlled (RC) schooner, about 1m long and with a 3.1 kg lead keel. It was built from plywood from detailed plans developed by Gary Webb, a real sailboat builder, at his company BearoSpace. On the computer, I printed the plans to 80% linear, which gives a displacement of 50% (0.8x0.8x08.=0.51). Thus the boat is made much lighter and easier to transport. This video gives details of the stages of my construction. Also shown here is the first sailing of my 80% Irene on a windy day on Sihl Lake, Switzerland. One is not alone in such a building venture. Gary has produced many helpful videos that can be found by googling "Youtube Sailtails". Many people around the world have built Irene, and they actively communicate via a forum found by googling "RC Schooner Irene Forum". I hope this video will encourage others to join this absorbing hobby of building and sailing.
