A man fed up with the deterrence and decades of the Cold War, decides to use the Soviet Unions latest achievement, the Red October, to start the the final showdown between the United States and the Soviet Union, to see, who is really more powerful. The threat of his independent launch forces the American's and Soviet hands, fully committing in a series of escalations, finally leading to full scale nuclear war between two nations with the ability to destroy the world hundreds of times over, leading to the creation of a Thousand Suns.
