■ We Go Anytime, Anywhere! Air Force Air Rescue Team Air Rescue Teams are dispatched to disaster sites to rescue pilots and civilians in distress. They conduct rescue operations regardless of location or time, and also provide public support, such as airlifting emergency patients and fighting wildfires. They were present at the Seongsu Bridge collapse in 1994, the Sampoong Department Store collapse in 1995, and the recent Jeju ship fire. Disaster situations leave no room for error. With lives directly at stake, the responsibility that comes with them is immense. In these races against time, they train tirelessly to fulfill their assigned roles. Behind flawless rescue operations are pilots and mechanics, who are responsible for the safety of the aircraft and rescue crews from takeoff to landing. Pilots operate a variety of helicopters for search and rescue missions across the Korean Peninsula and undergo simulator training to prepare for wartime situations and adverse weather conditions. Mechanics accompany the helicopters, checking for defects and inspecting blind spots that pilots cannot see with their own eyes. They maintain peak condition and are fully prepared to perfectly execute their missions, working in unison with rescue teams in the event of an emergency. ■ Enduring rigorous training to save lives! Air rescue teams operate across land, sea, and air, providing first aid. To secure the golden moment at a rescue site, air rescue teams undergo relentless training. Before being deployed, they undergo extensive training in parachute jumps, scuba diving, first aid, and equipment usage. The rigorous training continues, with more than half of the student rescuers failing. This marks the beginning of a long and lonely race for the student rescue team to become a perfect air rescue team. Only experienced rescuers with the answers on the ground can perfectly execute rescue missions. They may enter the ocean to rescue a simulated victim, or locate a pilot stranded in a mountainous area and then engage in rescue operations. However, to perfectly execute their missions, they must possess both physical strength and relevant knowledge. For this reason, air rescue workers spend two to three hours a day maintaining their physical fitness and earning over ten certifications, including an emergency medical technician license. It takes approximately five years to truly become an air rescue worker. Only those who have overcome this long battle with themselves can truly become air rescue workers. ■ Family: A Strong Supporter of Air Rescue Workers Preparing for an unpredictable future is the destiny of air rescue workers. For the safety of the nation and its people, they spend more than a week a month on standby, traveling between regions and units. Family is the driving force that enables them to endure this arduous training. There are wives who pray for their husbands and comfort them with warm meals, and there are children who take pride in being air rescue workers who save lives.
