Yaesu ATAS-120A Part 2 (Installation and First Contacts) #yaesu #atas #hamradio #antenna

#yaesu #atas #hamradio #antenna I was gifted a Yaesu ATAS-120A by one of the members of the Patreon support team. Needless to say, I am very grateful. The members of the N4HNH Radio Patreon team are a cut above. I started offering the Patreon support option in late September of 2020. Some have supported the channel, via Patreon, since October of 2020, making it possible for you to watch this video today. I have recommended the Active Tuning Antenna System, based upon the results of people I know, but I haven’t had the opportunity to use one myself. The feedback from those who have installed one for their mobile operation has been great. I look forward to getting one installed on my truck. This video shows the installation process and some initial testing of the Yaesu ATAS-120A with my Yaesu FT-891. I was able to find a mounting bracket that connects to an existing bolt under the hood, so I expect the antenna will be bonded well to the body of the vehicle, which should provide a good counterpoise. Remember, with the typical mobile antenna, the vehicle is the other half of the antenna. Good grounding/bonding is required in order to achieve good performance. Insufficient grounding/bonding will hamper the ability of the antenna to achieve an adequate SWR. Note: You will see the Yaesu FC-50 antenna matching unit in this video. It is not connected. I have used it with the ham stick antennas, as a touch-up tuner. The FC-50 isn’t necessary for the ATAS-120A. In fact, it isn’t possible to use both the ATAS-120A and the FC-50 at the same time because the menu in the FT-891 makes you choose one or the other. The ATAS-120A is an active tuning system. The antenna lengthens or shortens according to the operating frequency. I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful.
