My Appalachian setting of some selected verses of the Anavathmoi set to the plagal mixolydian mode, which is widely used in both Byzantine Chant and American folk music. These hymns accompany the soul’s journey upward toward God: out of exile, into repentance, toward light. The selected verses change each week, depending on the liturgical cycle or feast, but this recording is just offered as a model setting for prayerful and educational use.
