The origins of Bön are a fascinating blend of historical archaeology and deep spiritual mythology. While often called the "indigenous religion of Tibet," Bön tradition claims a far more expansive and international origin, specifically pointing to an ancient land called Tagzig (sTag-gzig), which modern scholars identify as Persia or ancient Iranic Central Asia. The development of Bön can be divided into three distinct phases: 1. Prehistoric Bön (Primitive Bön) Before Bön became an organized "Dharma" with scriptures and monasteries, it existed as a collection of localized shamanistic and animistic practices across the Tibetan plateau and the Himalayas. Focus: Propitiating local spirits (mountain gods, water spirits), divination, and healing. The Iranic Connection: Bönpo tradition holds that the founder, Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche, was born in the holy land of Olmo Lungring within Tagzig (Ancient Iran). Scholars point to Indo-European and Iranic influences in early Zhangzhung culture—such as the cult of the Sky Deer and specific ritual structures—as evidence of a cultural "bridge" between the Persian world and Western Tibet. 2. Yungdrung Bön (Eternal Bön) This is the "classical" form of Bön that most people recognize today. It represents the transition from local shamanism into a sophisticated, organized religion. The Kingdom of Zhangzhung: Centered around Mount Kailash in Western Tibet, the Zhangzhung Empire was the primary vehicle for Bön. According to tradition, the teachings were brought from Tagzig to Zhangzhung and then translated into the Tibetan language. Interaction with Buddhism (7th–9th Century): When Buddhism arrived in Tibet, a fierce rivalry broke out. Bön was initially the religion of the royal court. However, during the reign of King Trisong Detsen, Buddhism became the state religion, and Bönpos were famously persecuted or forced to hide their texts (Terma). The 11th Century Renaissance: After the collapse of the Tibetan Empire, Bön underwent a massive "re-systematization." To survive, it adopted a structure very similar to Buddhism—including monasticism, a canon of scriptures, and the concept of "Enlightened Buddhas"—while keeping its unique lineage and deities. 3. New Bön (Bön Sarma) Beginning around the 14th century, a syncretic movement emerged primarily in Eastern Tibet. Fusion: This tradition blended the "Eternal Bön" teachings with the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. It is famous for its "revealed" texts and honors figures like Padmasambhava (the Lotus-Born) alongside Bön deities. Current Status: Today, Bön is officially recognized as the fifth school of Tibetan religion, equal in status to the four Buddhist schools. Many "Tibetan" cultural staples—such as prayer flags, incense burning (Sang), and the Spirit Trap (Dos)—actually originated in Bön rituals before being absorbed into the broader Buddhist culture. Combining Phurpa’s grounded, primal frequency with psychedelic rotoscoping creates a fascinating tension between the "Ancient" and the "Astral." Contrast: High-contrast psychedelic colors (neons/fluorescents) against these ancient tones can represent the "Timelessness" of the Bön—showing that the ritual is as relevant in a digital, neon future as it was in a mountain cave. Surrealism vs. Ritual Precision Phurpa is incredibly disciplined; their movements are slow and deliberate. The surreal elements to represent the unseen world (spirits, deities, energy flows) that the monks are interacting with. While the rotoscoped figures remain steady and grounded, the background or the "auras" around them can be chaotic, shifting, and hyper-colorful.
