Confronto no Rio de Janeiro deixa turistas presos e expõe avanço do poder de fogo do tráfico

Last week, the Santa Marta slum, located in Botafogo, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, was the scene of an intense confrontation between drug traffickers and police. The operation aimed to arrest 44 criminals associated with the Comando Vermelho (Red Command). During the confrontation, a group of 60 tourists were trapped at the Dona Marta viewpoint due to the exchange of gunfire. According to investigations, the firepower of criminals in the region has increased significantly in recent years. The number of rifles in circulation is estimated to have quintupled, reaching approximately 30 weapons. The investment in the arsenal is estimated to exceed 500,000 euros. In addition to the increase in heavy weaponry, traffickers have begun imposing rules on visitors to the community, known for hosting international artists such as Madonna and Michael Jackson. Among the restrictions are controls on the use of cell phones and cameras by tourists. The police used drones to monitor illegal activities in the alleys of the slum for two years before the most recent operation. Despite the surveillance, Francisco Rafael Dias da Silva, known as “Mexicano,” managed to escape through the woods near the viewpoint after ordering armed resistance against the police action. Local drug trafficking offers sophisticated drugs to foreign visitors, with names like Flor de Gringa and Crumble, at prices reaching almost 340 euros per product. Investigations also point to a supply network for weapons coming mainly from the United States, through clandestine routes across the South American borders. During the operation in Santa Marta, six people were arrested, including Everton da Silva, identified as Mexicano's personal bodyguard.
